Review of The Birdcage (1996) by Alex S — 06 Nov 2008
I went into this with little/no expectation and came out of it having been thorougly entertained; it was a hoot.
The acting is top notch or comedy should I say, or even both. It felt like the actors were also having a wonderful time getting into their slightly OTT roles but that didn't make this that flimsy as a subject or film. I laughed out loud on several occasions and there were the partial bits of real characterisation thrown in. However, make no mistake this is a screwball comedy and its aim is to make you laugh and maybe, just maybe question a few things, mainly sexuality and our societal code. I think that subject has lost some of its originality or relevance by now but it is still more relevant than not.
A comedy riot. The John Wayne walk and immediate line by Williams is immensley on the mark.
