Review of The Birdcage (1996) by Johnny M — 28 Jan 2009
This is a good movie, not only because of its high comedic value (trust me it really is funny, and mixed funny, from silly slapstick funny to cleaver social satire funny) but it also hits of an important message. Ok, maybe, we now live in a society slightly more accepting of homosexuality than it used to be, however it still isn't completely or I wouldn't even feel the need to mention it. In the end it shouldn't matter, and that's what this movies about, challenging the idea that someone's sexuality is important in how you interact with a human being on a non sexual basis, and also that it's something that needs to be hidden for those who neither understand nor accept it.
Yes the characters in this book are complete stereotypes from the homosexual, to the homophobic, but I like to think, and not only that but I actually believe and have been told by other people that it is purposefully so, to further challenge our views on this social topic and highlight the movies message.
So yup, in my opinion it's one worth seeing, whatever your age, whatever your sexuality and whatever your views on homosexuality.
