Review of The Birdcage (1996) by Brian M — 10 Jan 2011
I have been watching a lot of gay themed movies lately, (thanks to my recent subscription to Netflix)And, people ask me why I have not submitted a review of the Birdcage. Well, I guess now would be a good time to do that. Even though probably just about everyone and their brother has seen it.
I really liked the birdcage. Considering that it was a remake of an older film, it wasn't quite as campy as the original, but Nathan Lane and Robin Williams were great in their roles.
Two gay partners who own a gay bar, who happen to have raised a son, who has decided that he wants to get married. They are of course very happy for the son, until they learn that they have to pretend to be straight because the son's future wife is the daughter of a self interest Senator who is going through a big scandal, and they don't want to further damage his career by having his daughter marry the son of gay guys.
They attempt to get rid of Nathan Lane's charactor by hoping to send him a vacation, only he doesn't know that he is going away. He finds out what is going on and gets very upset, so, they try to find a way to squeeze him into their plans, hoping that the senator will not figure out that they are gay. But, doing that appears to be very difficult, and funny!
Nathan steals the show, as he decides the only way to make this who thing work, is to pretend to be mom! He dons a wig and a dress and sits down to dinner with the Senator's small family, and, it is just hysterical from there! "Do you have any naked boys on your bowl?" Halarious!
Everyone in the movie delivers a great performance. But, I think Nathan Lane was the best part. Just too darn funny!
