Review of The Birdcage (1996) by Johnny T — 23 Feb 2011
The comedy features a flamboyant gay couple (Williams and Lane) who attempt to "play it straight" for their son's prospective in-laws. The film is so boisterously entertaining that it's easy for the unsuspecting viewer not to realize that there's a message here. The Birdcage is enchantingly witty. A spirited remake of the French drag farce, has everything in place, from eyeliner to one-liner. Performed with matchless aplomb and made with plush professionalism, pic serves up pure pleasure from beginning to end. Hilarious, frenetic and also touching.
VERDICT: "Full Price" - Second highest rating in the system (Positive to Mixed reaction). This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theater to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent...
