Review of The Big Year (2011) by Jamie B — 20 Jan 2012
The film has badly been marketed as a comedy when, whilst there are plenty of light hearted moments to chuckle at, it is more of a 'family movie' for the boys (which happens to be about birdie and lifes consequences to an obsessive way of life).
Owen is endearing as the champion determind to retain his title whilst struggling to save his marriage. A support cast including Barry Shabak Henley, Kevin Pollok, Rosemund Pike, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Anderson, Anjelica Huston, Rashida Jones and Tim Blake Nelson is impressive and works well.
The relationship that develops between Martin and Black is a pleasure to watch but the stand out moments are when Black and particularly Dennehy lock horns and later touchingly bond as his father comes to understand his sons obsession.
Good film.
