Review of The Big Year (2011) by Rex A — 11 Oct 2013
It's certainly not without its problems, but The Big Year is a disappointingly underrated and genuinely heartwarming film. The level of characterization is astounding for this type of movie, showing far more directorial effort than others of its kind.
The adventures of the three main birders, played by Black, Martin, and Wilson, are engaging, and it's quite easy to get swept up in the geeky zeal of birding. More than that, though, there's a believable level of emotional change that each individual character goes through based on their differing experiences throughout the year, making the ending satisfying and somewhat bittersweet.
Definitely a nice work that didn't get the attention it deserved.
