Review of The Big Year (2011) by Tara D — 09 Apr 2012
I know why this movie was not well-reviewed - people expected these A-list comedians to star in a typical slapstick, Hollywood farce. But it's a rare bird of a movie indeed -- a gently-paced, easy-going buddy movie with no villains or car chases, a few low-key chuckles and - surprisingly - a whole lot about birding! This would be perfect for amateur birders, anyone who owns binoculars or fills a bird feeder, or people who'd just love to be able to see more of North America.
The scenery photography is stunning, the CG and real birds featured in John Cleese's voiced-over info-bits are actually interesting, and if you stay for the credits you'd get an idea of how diverse this part of the animal kingdom really is.
Looking for a low-key cottage movie to watch with little kids and grandparents this summer? This is a gem.
