Review of The Big Year (2011) by Stephen A — 14 Feb 2013
Mostly Harmless. In fact without the all-star comedy crew one can hardly call it a comedy. Besides the performances by Jack Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wilson this movie was - hmmmm - stodgy. Yes, that's the word: stodgy! Let me put this into more detail (the alternate ending of my review).
It starts out riotous; Jack Black narrates in his forte, the admirably passionate yet pragmatic soul. The latter conveys the idea that this movie is going to carry on "oh so" tastefully. Well, in the end the ridiculousness of birding altogether seems rather tame.
As a matter of fact there are a few other subplots, which aren't at all tasteful and one cannot help but question exactly the aim of the makers. It causes one to question whether there was any comedy in the first place.
However I like Jack Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wilson "all-too-much" not to enjoy it.
