Review of The Big Store (1941) by Ryan V — 12 Jan 2013
Tommy Rogers (Tony Martin) is a singer looking to sell off his stake in a department store, but a seedy manager (Douglas Dumbrille) is looking to bump him off before anyone notices some shady accounting.
Tommy gets a trio of bodyguards for his situation, but they come in the form of Groucho, Chico, and Harpo. The Big Store has a couple of sublimely funny moments, including Harpo's secret room concerto and a screwball chase scene that serves as the movie's finale.
At the same time, it falls quite short of the highs established in classic comedies like Duck Soup or A Night At The Opera. I liked enough of this film to give it a thumbs-up, but I wouldn't recommend it to a Marx novice.
