Great legendary movie with the equally legendary Humphrey Bogart. None if its praise is exaggerated. It took me right back to "The Singing Detective", which was obviously inspired by Chandler's Marlowe character and the feel of the fourtees that goes with it.

It's action-packed, containing clever, witty dialogues, interesting locations (finally I had a chance to see the famous opening scene in the sun room), a large variety of characters and a very complicated plot.

In fact, I found the plot so complicated I began to lose track of it. I had to read a plot outline on the Internet and talk to someone who knew it well to figure everything out. That is the only reason why I limit my rating to 4 stars instead of 5.

Apparently, the remake from 1978 by Michael Winner (starring Robert Mitchum) isn't bad either, and clarifies part of the plot.
