Review of The Big Sleep (1946) by Adam P — 13 Dec 2007
Call it Film Noir Extreme--Hawks' version of Chandler's novel is full to the brim with everything its genre has to offer...a little too full. Burdened by its overly convoluted plot, The Big Sleep pushes itself to the edge of self-parody.
Not to say that the film isn't incredibly sharp, smart, and entertaining--it just doesn't know the meaning of restraint, and its intended impact falters for it.
