Review of The Big Sleep (1946) by Amanda E — 03 Mar 2008
I was so disappointed. I was all set to loooovvvee this movie. And then I saw it. I just don't get it--I love noir, I love Bogey & Bacall, I love Howard Hawks. But this was just okay for me--I found my attention drifting as I watched.
It was a typically convoluted noir plot, but I couldn't seem to care enough to follow the twists and turns. And Bogart actually had more chemistry with a bookstore clerk he had one scene with than he had with Bacall for the entire movie.
I know this is supposed to be a classic, one of the greats, but I just don't get it.
