Review of The Big Sleep (1946) by Jacob L — 10 Jan 2009
This is considered one of the most confusing detective films ever made. Apparently having three writers (one being William Faulkner) working individually on a screenplay makes it more than reasonably convoluted.
The good news is that THE BIG SLEEP makes up for its confusing plot with style and substance and fireworks, many of which come from Bogie and Bacall, who, by the time the film was released, were married.
She was 22, he 47. Based on Raymond Chandler's novel about hard-boiled private eye Philip Marlowe, who is hired by an ailing aristocrat to stop some unattractive blackmail attempts aimed at one of his spoiled daughters.
And the plot, as they say, thickens.
