I think that if one focuses on the fact that Sean Regan's disappearance was the main focus of Marlowe's investigations (or at least never far from his thoughts) because they were friends... then the plot becomes easier to grasp.
I'll admit It took me 2 viewings to appreciate that fact.. and 3 to appreciate the finer subtleties the directors, actors and writers put in it.
