Chandler's novels were long on style and short on substance, substituting coincidence for plot development, and the result often made little sense but was fun to read. The Big Sleep was one of the most confusing -- Chandler himself admitted he didn't know who killed one character or why -- and censorship made this adaptation even murkier.
But the performances (especially by Bogart, Bacall, and Cook) make it excellent entertainment anyway.
