Review of The Big Sleep (1946) by Don M — 28 Mar 2010
I loved the snappy dialogue and the chemistry between Bogart and Bacall, but I must be no Philip Marlowe: I had a really hard time keeping up with the film. So many characters! So many motivations!
I have to say, though, some of Marlowe's lines just had me in stitches. Literally laughing out loud. "Go ahead and scratch" is one.
The DVD I saw did have two versions of the film: A 1945 version in which the plot was apparently more linear and easier to follow, and a 1946 version in which several scenes were reshot, replaced entirely, or resequenced. Quite an interesting back story on all of that! Anyway, my mistake may have been watching the nore convoluted 1946 version.
