Review of The Big Sleep (1946) by Dave J — 13 May 2011
Classic Hollywood crime story based on the seminal Raymond Chandler novel, with Bogart in fine form as archetypal private detective Philip Marlowe investigating blackmail and murder surrounding the mysterious and wealthy Sternwood family.
Interesting example of film lore for several reasons, with many scenes re-shot to take more advantage of the coy chemistry between Bogie and off-screen lover Lauren Bacall, and for a baroque screenplay so complex it ended up confusing Chandler, screenwriter William Faulkner and director Howard Hawks.
