Review of The Big Sleep (1946) by Joe C — 22 Oct 2012
In my opinion, an overtly complicated storyline is not a ligitimate reason to be disillusioned by a film. All it means is this film requires another viewing, and possibly some heavy thinking in order to extract all of the plot and hidden messages and metaphors the film has to offer. Only after this can a valid opinion be concluded. Sometimes the payoff of this effort is (subjectively) less than adequate, which I feel is the case with The Big Sleep.
It is in my outspoken opinion that this star studded, critically acclaimed, certified fresh, and Top 250 list worthy film bites off just a little bit more than it can chew and loses the viewer in a confused jumble of names and red herrings, and a romance subplot that really feels forced, and it builds up to an unsatisfying and abrupt climax. This is not a bad film however, if noir is your thing, this film will be a fun watch with it's excellent cinematography, slick dialouge, and brilliant performances from its cast.
