Review of The Big Sick (2017) by Brendan S — 11 Jul 2017
Written by (with Emily V. Gordon) and starring Kumail Nanjiani (of HBOs Silicon Valley), 2017s The Big Sick is a heartfelt romantic comedy that excels where many films of the genre fail; sincerity and an ability to make the laughs coming just as much as making us care for the people on screen.
It is no surprise as this has producer Judd Apatow's fingerprints all over it-with that brand of improvisational humor juxtaposed with some good 'ole drama-that really seals the deal. Directed by Michael Showalter (writer and actor from 2001s Wet Hot American Summer), the performances on screen have a real authenticity and air to them (especially Holly Hunter and Ray Romano), the flow of the picture never loses sight or momentum and the use of visuals to enhance the humor (or drama) works remarkably well.
The Big Sick isn't a reinvention of genre or a game changer but for what it is-a sweet romantic comedy/drama-it stands front and center stage.
