Review of The Big Sick (2017) by Bob K — 24 Dec 2017
How exciting is a movie that isn't terribly exciting, but just gets everything right? I guess if it makes us smile throughout, and then finishes with a big payoff, that's enough to give it a pretty high rating.
But you also need to be impressed with the actors you're watching, and this movie has that in excess. Ray Romano and Holly Hunter and Anupam Kher add so much necessary color to an otherwise glum story.
Does anyone go into this movie without knowing the end? Everything works out for Emily, Kumail, and his family, we learn in the last 30 seconds, but we really don't know why, particularly with his family.
That might be another movie. Also, why is stand-up comedy in a film never funny? Like ever, as the kids say today. No exception here.
