Review of The Big Sick (2017) by Meredith W — 30 Dec 2017
"The Big Sick" is drama, comedy and romance all rolled into one. And the result is quite good and different to the usual formulaic fodder around. The story is a real -life one; Pakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani and grad student Emily Gardner fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash.
When she contracts a mysterious and dangerous illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her not only her parents but his own feelings and his family's expectations of him. It is funny and poignant and the cast all do an excellent job.
The images of the real-life Emily in the final credits are a nice bonus too.
