Review of The Big Sick (2017) by Steviegjd — 02 Jul 2017
One can't help but conclude that there are a number of racist, xenophobic or bigoted reviews panning this wonderful movie as none of the negative user reviews are viewable. Maybe they didn't bother actually writing a review because they are small minded racists, xenophobes or bigots.
Either way, their ratings make no sense. This movie is funny, touching and sweet, with terrific performances and a great heart. Kumail Nanjiani is terrific playing himself in this autobiographical romantic comedy.
Zoe Kazan is charming and perfectly believable as Emily. Their relationship, and its ebbs and flows, feels genuine. Holly Hunter is wonderful as Emily's mother. You forget how good she can be in the right part.
She is a real joy to watch in this film. Hunter sort of carries the middle of the film. Ray Romano is fine as Emily's father, though the role is rather thankless. Hunter's Beth is the critical parent here.
Kumail's family is played well and they are perfectly annoying and seeped in their traditions. Kumail has to deal with racist bigots and a family who wants him to stay within their culture, even though they've transplanted to Chicago from Pakistan.
This movie has many laughs and a few tears. The movie has an independent film feel and is bogged down with typical corporate Hollywood conventions. It is well worth watching and I truly enjoyed it.
The 5.5 rating right now is a joke.
