Review of The Big Sick (2017) by Jack C — 13 Jul 2017
This one surprised me vs. my expectations from the trailer. The trailer left me with the impression of intelligent but non-stop hilarity, almost a la Soap or even Monty Python. What I got instead was strikingly sweet, touching, meaningful, and, to be quite honest, something that often brought a smile, but rarely a laugh.
For me then, at this moment, it was a bit not so much what I longed for or wanted, but may have been what I needed. Despite having many friends in Pakistan, I learned more about the intimate details of both Pakistani social moors, but also how those intersect with life in the US for emigres.
So, I recommend it to you, but not for a meaningless gut laugh and a relief from the stress of the week, but rather an intellectual and cultural challenge, sprinkled here and there with good-natured humor.
Hope you enjoy it!
