Review of The Big Sick (2017) by Katie M — 15 Jul 2017
The Big Sick.
This is the big screen version of the real story of how Kumail Nanjiani fell in love with Emily Gordon all while she was is a medically induced coma. The film is about risking career, family, and religious tradition for love. Kumail does a great job of being his usually funny self, but also shows his acting chops during multiple emotional scenes. The film switches gears from a standard romcom when Emily is put into the coma and Kumail has meet and bond with Emily's family during their darkest moment. Ray Romano makes a hilarious yet heartfelt comeback and Holly Hunter is wonderful as always. Their desperation is tangible in this film, you really feel that this is a family terrified for their daughter. Kumails relationship with his parents feels just as real. They want him to be arranged with a Pakistani wife, but the only thing holding Kumail to these traditions are the love of his family and how much he doesn't want to hurt them. Its also nice seeing a movie with a Pakistani lead, that dives heavily into Muslim beliefs. The Big Sick is incredibly charming, funny, and full of heart.
4 out of 5.
