Review of The Big Short (2015) by Dragonsfoe . — 02 May 2016
The Big Short is surprisingly entertaining due to the fact that its premise involves a lot of numbers and complicated scenarios. It manages to be educational, informative and energetic with a cast and a director who is clearly passionate about the subject.
The Big Short sports an all stare cast. It is no doubt that they are talented especially Carrel who pulls of serious roles in a great fashion as of late. The film is very energetic and informative, a mix movies don't make that often. McKay does a great job in telling he viewers exactly what is happening and teaching about different concepts and vocabulary in the housing market, and that is something worth admiring.
On the other hand, this film feels over directed. McKay does a lot to make it feel like a live documentary. He does many 4th wall breaking so and celebrity cameos that were really fun but in some ways overdoing those may be too much. There are also underdeveloped characters without a firm stance on what their doing or what their purpose is.
Overall this film was a very educational experience. It's a great example of entertaining a viewer in addition to teaching about a subject that they probably didn't care about before the film was shown to them. By the end of it I found myself caring more about the significance of the 2008 financial crash, and careful of what's to come,.
Rating: 7.9 (B+).
