Review of The Big Short (2015) by Jamie J — 28 May 2016
An extremely well thought out film, managing to mix frequently clever and oft hilarious moments with an extremely hard hitting clarity that you don't see very often. Director Adam mckay manages to make stocks and money management interesting, with fourth wall breaking humour and celebrity cameos, which on paper really shouldn't work but here they do.
Without these moments of levity the hard hitting subject matter of The Big Short may be too much, showing you the absolute worst of humanity, ripping people off and simply not giving a fuck, there is a great moral ambiguity to the film. There are no good guys here, just varying degrees of how much people care.
Certainly Mckay has made amends for Anchorman 2, quite easily with one of the most gripping films I've seen in years, like Steve Jobs, The Big Short shouldn't be interesting at all, and in fact is quite the opposite.
