Review of The Big Short (2015) by Brendan N — 16 Jun 2017
Who knew you could have a genuinely fun time watching a movie that centers on subprime mortgages, CDOs, credit default swaps, and the housing market as a whole? Does The Big Short get everything right? Probably not. But hats off to director and writer Adam McKay for making it a fun ride.
From characters being able to randomly break the fourth wall and talk to the camera mid-story, resulting in many laughs, to the investigative and suspenseful plot that keeps the story moving without ever getting too bogged down, The Big Short lands a home run. I laughed, I was beside myself, I was saddened, and I was angry. Oscar-worthy acting and writing.
Oh, and why not throw into the movie a scene of Margot Robbie as herself teaching the audience about subprime mortgages while in a bubble bath, or Selena Gomez as herself playing blackjack as she explains to the camera how synthetic CDOs worked. Genius.
