Review of The Big Short (2015) by Rootiekazootie — 29 Dec 2015
See it, see it, see it.
How often these days does one see an "investigative film"? Almost never. Shows what a sad state Hollywood is in. But this is not dull--- it is exciting and very, very funny. Though one might consider it graveyard or gallows humor. And the writing and especiallySee it, see it, see it.
How often these days does one see an "investigative film"? Almost never. Shows what a sad state Hollywood is in. But this is not dull--- it is exciting and very, very funny. Though one might consider it graveyard or gallows humor. And the writing and especially the acting is top notch. Gallows humor because it is totally real --- all of this really happened, the characters all really exist---- and it shows that even the protagonists--- who believe the financial and governmental system is corrupt--- in fact, their careers are based on "contrarian" investing based on finding and exposing the flaws in the system-- even they all end up being astounded at the incredible depth of the corruption--- beyond what they dreamed or imagined.
Yes, the movie is a bit confusing for two reasons--- first, it follows three separate storylines so, at times, if you're not paying close attention, it can be a bit hard to juggle all three storylines--- so pay close attention, it's worth it. Second, what they're exploring and explaining is very complex and confusing--- but that's the point--- the "masters of the universe" of Wall Street--- otherwise known by the technical term "parasites"-- have purposely created "products" that are so complex, mysterious and impenetrable that no one really can understand them. If you were not really given a sense of the complexity, you wouldn't understand why this is all so hard to understand.
Finally, the sort of wacky technique of having guest celebrities step in at odd points to explain things to the audience, I think, really works--- both in terms of actually getting our attention and adding some much needed humor.
This is definitely a risk-taking movie and, unlike the risks that the Wall Street parasites took--- this risk pays off big. Brilliant, thought-provoking, a major contribution to the public dialogue about the future and direction of this country and our world. the acting is top notch.
