Review of The Big Short (2015) by Kim L — 21 Mar 2016
I'm kind of surprised this has such high praise. I found the movie to be a bit of a mess. I was interested in the subject of the movie, I just didn't like the execution. It felt like Adam McKay wanted so bad to be making a Martin Scorcese movie, he just isn't as skilled at doing that.
What really grated on me was that the characters all felt cartoon. Carell and Gosling are both wearing wigs that are SNL level of quality...they just look like shit...and half the cast seem to be doing funny accents.
It just felt so phony to me. Bale was the best part and he is not nearly in it enough. Then there are the goofy tangent crap with celebrities explaining the complex nature of the mortgage issues. I know what they were going for, but it just didn't work for me.
A movie with a similar premise and tone was already successfully made, and it was Scorcese's "Wolf of Wall Street." This movie wants to be that so bad, but doesn't have the same level of focus or talent behind the scenes.
It isn't necessarily a bad movie, but I think most people are praising it because of the subject matter (we all hate the banks for the housing crisis and the economy collapse), but as a movie it just fell short for me.
