Review of The Big Short (2015) by Adam R — 23 Mar 2016
While I can't say that it will get those unfamiliar with economics (myself included) interested in it, the passion behind and in front of the camera is so infectious that you'll find yourself shaking your fist in rallying anger. Steve Carell gives the best and most dynamic performance of the film and his character's story is easily the most interesting-even interjecting some brilliant character development. Unfortunately, the other actors don't have as nearly compelling stories and drag the movie in spots as a result. Brad Pitt appears on the sidelines giving only a passable performance and Christian Bale doesn't have a whole lot to do after the first 40 minutes. Still, there's clearly a lot of great storytelling here and the filmmakers are trying their hardest to simplify the logistics enough for general audiences without making it too obvious.
Who'd like it? Anyone who's a fan of Steve Carell will love his performance here. Those who are interested in economics and that period of time should also get something of value out of this.
