Review of The Big Short (2015) by Bill C — 15 Oct 2016
To be honest this isn't one I would normally pick to watch, reading the synopsis it sounds like it would make an interesting yet shocking documentary if done right but a dramatisation sounded like it could be a little dry.
For the first half an hour I did consider switching it off, I didn't connect with any of the characters and I was beginning to think my fears were true about expected levels of interest. In addition to this I found the documentary style of the film and Ryan Gosling talking to camera every 5 minutes a little off putting.
However, it was the intro of Steve Carrell's character that gave the film the heart and drive that it needed. Carrell's character is the audience, the ordinary man who sees the injustice of what these untouchable bankers have gotten away with for so long, the audience discovers shocking scam after shocking scam just as Carrell's character does and it works well.
Sometimes you have to give a film a chance and I'm glad I did with this one.
