Review of The Big Lebowski (1998) by Brett H — 26 May 2014
Ridiculously silly but highly enjoyable Coen Brothers classic that really doesn't amount to much and that's the charm! Jeff Bridges is fantastic as "The Dude" and so many of his abstract and quirky lines are so memorable, you'll be quoting them immediately after.
Then there's Walter, possibly John Goodman's greatest performance as a war vet with a screw loose and prone to over-the-top outbursts. The plot covers a lot of ground, but at the same time goes nowhere so if you're looking for payoff, you'll be disappointed.
In typical Coen Brothers fashion they leave a lot of story threads open and bring their typical dark tragedy at the very end, which is no surprise at all. It's a tad overrated and definitely not my favourite film of theirs, but the hilariously quirky characters more than make up for the shortcomings of the plot; the dude abides!
