The Coen Brothers at their hilarious, trippy, irreverent best.
Not a slacker-stoner movie: it's way better written, directed and acted than that. Dialogue-wise it's a comedy, plot-wise it's a Raymond Chandler-like mystery.
It's the comedy that makes it though. Incredibly funny, in an off-beat sort of way. Dialogue is insanely original, fresh and simply wonderful.
The performances are spot-on. I can't imagine anyone other than Jeff Bridges playing The Dude. John Goodman and Steve Buscemi are perfect as his sidekicks.
Even the minor parts are played brilliantly. John Turturro, as Jesus, deserved way more screen time. However, he may then have stolen the show...
A brilliant modern-day classic.
