Review of The Big Lebowski (1998) by Ben R — 03 Mar 2015

What a great movie. It's like the Coen brothers create movies just for me, the perfect blend of comedy and drama and action and excitement. There are so many lines of dialogue that are hilarious, but it's impossible to explain exactly why they are. There's just something about the way the movie proceeds that makes everything hilarious.

There are so many vivid, unique characters. The Dude is a marvelous creation, brought to life by Jeff Bridges. John Goodman's Walter may be annoying sometimes, but he's so funny and unique and great. Julianne Moore's Maude was one of my favorite parts of the movie; I love Julianne Moore to begin with, and something about her delivery of each of her lines was so funny. There was something physical about her performance, like in the weird scene where she's just rocking back and forth to increase chances of conception. Philip Seymour-Hoffman and Steve Buscemi were both great in supporting roles (Donny's death made me sadder than it should've).

Above all, this movie was just super fun. I laughed a lot, I had fun guessing where the plot would go, and I had fun watching all the strange visuals, like the camera view from inside of the bowling ball as it spun down the lane, or the Dude's hallucination. In the end, I don't have a ton of deep analysis for the film. I just had fun.
