Review of The Big Lebowski (1998) by Jim F — 09 Oct 2012
The Coen Brothers seem to excel in stories which involve half witted ordinary men on the streets getting themselves into hot water as a result of nothing more than a badly thought out brainwave. This follows supremely on the heels of Fargo, which is a plan gone wrong, and way before the underated Burn After Reading which takes buffoonery of the simple man to new heights.
The Big Lebowski is the greatest of movies of this theme. From the subtlety of the humour and dialogue, to the vividness of the characters, this movie rules. Jeff Bridges's character, performs like a parody of itself.
The self proclaimed, laid back, pot smoking "Dude" gets nothing but worked up, beaten up, and stressed throughout. His daft friend Walter, played by John Goodman is my favorite, as the typical ex-nam, hot headed, overconfident, interfering, no sense of restraint, moron of a friend, who does nothing but continually make matters worse for the dude as a result of his interfering.
I could cut clever hilarious qoutations from this movie by the bucket load. That, with the as before mentioned abundance of interesting characters make this one of my favorite movies of all time.
