Review of The Big Country (1958) by Tara H — 26 Dec 2008
Classic western saga of feuding clans, with a surprisingly positive message. Gregory Peck plays one of his best roles as the noble outsider who rejects violence and ultimately transforms the land. With strong support from Carroll Baker, Charlton Heston and Jean Simmons.
Despite the epic sweep of the story, director William Wyler keeps it simple and understated. The musical score, by Jerome Moross, is one of the most memorable in movie history.
