Review of The Big Combo (1955) by Blake P — 17 Aug 2011
"The Big Combo" is one of the best seedy film noirs out there. Trouble is, it seems to be forgotten at this point! Lt. Diamond (Wilde), is a cop who's seriously obsessed with catching evil crime boss Mr.
Brown (Conte). While trying to prove Brown is guilty of all of the crimes he seems to be doing, Diamond finds a lot of shady characters and dim- lighted buildings to finish this dream of his. This is by far, the best example of film noir ever made.
The cinematographer does a fantastic job of only using natural lighting. The darkness of this movie is almost gorgeous in a way, because it reflects the definition of film noir pretty much. I give "The Big Combo" only four stars because of how overused the plot is, but the other aspects are just so good that it really makes a film noir lovers delight.
Many comments have complained of a bad DVD transfer, but I strongly disagree. Most likely their DVD players are broken, because it worked fine. The camera might not be the best, but it works way better than they say.
For a dark and dreary movie, this is for you.
