Review of The Big Bounce (2004) by Johnny T — 10 Mar 2011
The work of Elmore Leonard has produced amazing movies, notably Out of Sight, Get Shorty and Jackie Brown, not to mention the great series Justified. The Big Bounce is soooo not one of them. First Hollywood screwed up The Big Bounce in a 1969 dud starring Ryan O'Neal.
Now they've done it a second time, this time with Owen Wilson as Jack, a con artist living in Hawaii who becomes entangled in a series of double and triple crosses orchestrated by a real estate developer (Gary Sinise), his wife (Bebe Neuwirth) and mistress (Sara Foster), as well as a judge (Morgan Freeman) and his stooges (Harry Dean Stanton and, seriously, Willie Nelson).
So many great actors, so much wasted talent. That includes director George Armitage, seriously misfiring after helming good movies like Miami Blues and Grosse Pointe Blank. Sad.
