Review of The BFG (2016) by Adam R — 16 Dec 2016
This film totally won me over. "The BFG" is an absolutely lovely and totally good-natured family entertainment, and I'm shocked by the slightly lukewarm response it's got. Maybe it's to do with expectation; perhaps some people found it unsatisfying since the book is so universally celebrated, or perhaps some people thought it wasn't as good as some of Spielberg's best films, and those are valid arguments.
But I have to say I was consistently charmed by it, there were several moments in it that had me in awe, and I just loved this unlikely friendship between a girl and a giant. It has the charm that "E.
T." had, it has the sense of wonder that "Jurassic Park" had, and it is so full of heart that I was completely immersed in it. It is visually stunning, the motion-capture technique is superb, and the whole thing at the Buckingham palace had me laughing like an idiot.
"The BFG" is the most charming film Spielberg has done in a very long time, and I thought it was really good.
