Review of The Best of Me (2014) by George M — 17 Oct 2014
Unapologetically formulatic and (gasp!) flat, this love story about a boy from the wrong side of the tracks who falls in love with the southern belle only to have the carpet (or in this case, the garden) pulled out from underneath them has potentially maxed out all the prefabricated joy that Nicholas Sparks adaptations normally have.
..I was not moved, despite the fact that Dawson (James Marsden - who has smoldering down to a science) and Amanda (Michelle Monaghan) are beautiful together in the present with Gerald McRaney as the cosmic force bringing them together (and his performance gets the gold star).
..unfortunately, it's more mush than anything that has come previously...'The Notebook' is, of course, the apex but 'Safe Haven' and 'The Lucky One' worked for whatever reason, but there were no tears this time around.
..in fact though Dawson reads Stephen Hawking in the movie, the best part of my experience was seeing the trailer for 'The Theory of Everything' which is about Hawking and his wife and looks absolutely, positively the winning love story of 2014.
