Review of The Best Man (1999) by Sean D — 05 Dec 2013
And I thought Terrence Howard was hood until Morris Chestnut stepped up to the plate halfway through the film. Quite funny to note, you have hood-like characters and non-so in the film. Either way, I don't care what anyone says this is a Romance / Drama that starts turning into a somewhat gripping Suspense film. Not many will look at the film this way, but we have here is a Psychological Thriller.
What's interesting of note, there are deeply rooted issues that are exploited with this film. Both vendors are exploited, but since I always feel that most men are completely insecure and in denial of their problems, in 1999 I didn't even know it was bad. 2013 then it's hell. I had to rewind the film a couple of times to hear certain things, because I watched this as a film buff who is going to see the sequel in a few hours, and psychologically as understanding the insecurities of all the characters, especially the men and the relationship between them.
I really don't feel like this is your typical love-drama. It was very well written, the actors are all amazing. I felt like Sanaa Lathan had the weakest role that I've ever seen her in a movie, and she still came up very much as very strong character towards the end of the film. Even Regina White, played an extremely weak role which still serves a deep purpose with one of the side main characters and plays her role and purpose in the film very well.
This is an extremely well written film, this isn't one of my favorite genres, documentary-action-comedy-martial arts. But this was still a very good film that all should see and is one of the top films of its genre, and a very good colored film.
