Review of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012) by Manuela B — 14 Nov 2012
Bravo Zulu for a terrific job on this one worthy of Oscar nomination! A perfect blend of drama, comedy, slight romance and yes sadness too. The message it sends will resonate with so many viewers because ALL of us will find ourselves in similar circumstances- that is the cycle of life movie fans! We have seven travelers that are financially distressed men and women of retirement age lured by an invitation to "outsource" themselves for a stay at the newly opened Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in Jaipur, India.
Upon arrival, they discover a place that is far from the luxurious retreat "for the elderly and beautiful" that its advertising claims. The proprietor, Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) was terrific and thanks to the wise advice of some of the elderly residents, Sonny musters the courage to follow his heart and fight for the woman he loves despite his parent's fierce objections.
Oh this film is an eye opener and teaches so many things about life- value of friendship, lost loves, redemption, courage in the face of adversity, making new beginnings. Sometimes it is better "late than never" as the old adage goes and even the younger generation HAS something to learn from these wonderful senior citizens that could very well be our parents.
Eager to visit India in part because of this film. Terrific acting by all, solid script and flawless direction. Highly recommended folks!!
