Review of The Benchwarmers (2006) by Jesse H — 19 May 2012
The Benchwarmers is one of the most stupid films I have ever had the displeasure of watching. The film has an interesting idea, a group of adults create a little league baseball team in order to make up for time they lost in their childhood.
However, the way this idea is handled is poor. The Benchwarmers has all of the 5 cliches of Adam Sandler, who produced this film. These cliches are: children using profanity, bodily humor, adults who act like children, sexual humor, and an underdeveloped plot.
This film puts aside all subtlety and instead bombards you with dumb joke after dumb joke. To be fair though, I did occasionally laugh at this film, but I didn't laugh enough to really make this film worthwhile.
"The Benchwarmers" is much like the lower end of Adam Sandler's recent work, disgusting, bizarre, and unfunny. To say that I did not enjoy this movie would be an understatement. "The Benchwarmers" is just a painful reminder of what this film could have been if someone funny directed it.
Instead, we get Dennis Dugan, who's poor directing sinks this film. The film also has a painful moral that not only has been told hundreds of times before, but has been taught better before. "The Benchwarmers" has no focus or emotional center.
It's just a swirling vertex of perverted jokes, annoying characters, and unfunny scenes that do nothing but take up space. So, overall, I personally did not enjoy "The Benchwarmers", but I imagine that if you tend to enjoy Adam Sandler's shtick you will probably get some enjoyment from this movie.
And, I expect that if you've never been a fan of Adam Sandler, that you probably wouldn't need to read this review to realize that you won't enjoy "The Benchwarmers". 2/5 stars.
