Review of The Belko Experiment (2017) by Will K — 17 Mar 2017
Since 2010 and the supposed end to the "Saw franchise (until this October), it seemed that Horror had softened up to a younger audience. With an abundance of PG-13 rated Horror films the past few years, gore seemed to lose steam in the genre until recently.
"The Belko Experiment" does not reinvent any wheels but I can happily say that this film alone is the most intense and brutally violent mainstream film of the past decade. Unlike "The Purge", this mashes both the Horror/Thriller and Comedy genres into a perfect mix.
Definitely not as smart or original as Blumhouse's most recent "Get Out", but "The Belko Experiment" has the right amount of head exploding/bashing, neck twisting, ax fueled gruesome imagery with moments of stoner humor.
Not to mention, some nods towards "Battle Royale" and "The Office"/"Office Space". For what it is, "The Belko Experiment" is a perfect midnight movie with memorable grisly scenes and is destined to earn cult status.
