Review of The Belko Experiment (2017) by Andy W — 22 Apr 2017
The Belko Experiment.
Written by Guardians of the Galaxy director/writer James Gunn and directed by Wolf Creek's Greg McLean The Belko Experiment is an interesting film about human nature and how people's personality changes when their lives are threatened and put into jeopardy.
A group of workers at the 'Belko' company in Bogotá Columbia are forced to take part in a game of kill or be killed when, following a complete building lockdown a mysterious voice over the tannoy explains a set of rules that the workers must adhere too to survive to the end of the day. The game is a simple one, kill your colleagues and the last one standing gets to walk free.
What follows is a very gory but fun journey into the human psyche and what limits you're prepared to go to in order to stay alive.
I enjoyed the film, the gore level was pretty cool and the story skips along at a decent pace. My only concern and this surprises me is that Gunn hasn't really fleshed out his characters and you really don't care who gets it. It all becomes a little monotonous without anyone to really root for.
The cast are decent and it was good to see Michael Rooker on the screen even if his role felt more like a cameo rather than a proper part.
Ultimately I think the Belko Experiment was a fun ride but due to lack of character development doesn't quite reach the level of excitement as it should have done. 6/10.
