Review of The Believer (2001) by Juan M — 09 Jul 2008
This movie would be great were it only for its depiction of the inescapable attraction and ultimate equivalence of opposing extremes. But it is in its obsession with Ishmael and Isaac, and the ideas of submission as well as hate without reason, infinite nullity, and apotheosis through annihilation, that things really become interesting.
Ryan Gosling gives one of the most intense performances I've ever seen, and the handheld camera amplifies this. But it's the script that really stands out, and the concepts it explores are electrifying.
