Review of The Believer (2001) by Kami L — 06 Oct 2008
Great movie.
At first I thought this would be just another "American History X", but actually these two have very little in common. "Believer" is not at all about nazism. It's about judeism, denying ones heritage and the contradictions and inner struggle about that.
Henry Bean really grabs this subject and throws it straight to spectator's face. There are many philosofical and psychological questions involved, but this movie is not some pointless pseudo intelligent garbage. Nearly everything is represented in very "here and now"-type of manner. No purposeful violence or sentimental overload neither. Just enough to get the point clear. Bean (he's a jew btw.) throws in some self critic and keeps everything in good balance so it won't turn out as a sympathy act.
Biggest difference between this and "American History X" is that A.H.X never really spoke to me. "Believer" did.
