Review of The Believer (2001) by Jose M — 04 Feb 2009
I absolutely loved this film. There are some obvious parallels between this film and the vastly superior "American History X," but there is a lot more reason and thought applied in this film.
It explores broader themes, such as the existence of god, and the rationality of faith. That I believe, is something that made appreciate this film far more than other moviegoers would. Additionally, Ryan Gosling's performance BLEW ME AWAY.
He was absolute dynamite in this movie. His character was so much more developed and intricate than Ed Norton's in "American History X," and also far more conflicted with himself and his identity.
Why he was not even mentioned for an Oscar is beyond my grasp, because it is my opinion HE SHOULD HAVE WON with this performance. Overall, I am very glad to have seen this film (in a class, of all places), and hope to see it again.
