Review of The Beguiled (2017) by Jennifer A — 02 Jul 2017

Not as captivating, atmospheric or unsettling as the original. Not as deep as the book. Not the worst movie I have ever seen but it just doesn't live up to either the original film or the novel in any way.

Pretty major scenes and characters are cut from this film so some of it does not even make sense unless you have either seen or read the prior versions. And for those who will say it should be reviewed on its own merit, give me a break--it was not even created on its own merit.

If that isn't enough then I can report that I saw it with a friend who didn't know there was a previous film version and knows there is a book but has not read it and she said it was not bad but that it seemed very shallow in terms of character development and relationships which made a lot of it seem like it didn't add up or that it was missing something.

I don't know, should have waited for video.
