Review of The Beguiled (2017) by Rachel B — 05 Jul 2017
I really wanted to like this. I'll give it this, it is nice to look at. But, with such an amazing cast this should have been an intriguing, "beguiling" intense thriller. Instead it is appears to be flirting and focused simply more on a pretty isolated atmosphere and every actor but Nicole Kidman appears to be underacting (the true stars of the movie were the cicadas).
What bothered me from the start is the film is set in Virginia but was filmed in Louisiana, and it looked like it. There is almost too much quiet (the music score is almost nonexistent and unmemorable when it could have helped this film a lot).
The film is in dire need of more dialogue and actual conversations especially between the girls and the teachers. If you are interested in "atmosphere" or are studying film making then give it a watch, otherwise skip it and find yourself a copy of the Clint Eastwood film.
